Heidi Baker is a missionary whose passion is calling people into a radical place of intimacy with the Lord Jesus. With her husband Rolland Baker, Heidi co-founded Iris Ministries, a missions organization dedicated to serving Jesus and the very poor, especially in Mozambique. Heidi’s message of what God’s love in action looks like is one of the most revolutionary and effective in the world today, and has moved thousands to lay their lives down for the sake of Love.
Heidi Baker was powerfully called to the missions field at age sixteen when she was living on an Indian reservation in Mississippi as an American Field Service student. Several months after she was led to Jesus, she was taken up in a vision and audibly heard Jesus tell her to be a minister and missionary to Asia, England, and Africa. After marrying Rolland, they started Iris Ministries in 1980 and traveled to sit with the poor in the slums of central Jakarta, Hong Kong, and London. After ministering for twelve years in Asia and three years in the UK, Rolland Heidi arrived in Mozambique in 1995. Believing that the most likely place to see a revival was among the most unlikely, they were drawn to Mozambique, which was officially listed at the time as the poorest country of the world. Upon arrival, Heidi and Rolland were given an orphanage of 80 children that no one could or would support; as they began to pour out their hearts to the street children there, they began to see God move through amazing miracles. Iris now sees thousands find Jesus every month. The deaf hear, the blind see, and the poor hear the good news.
Heidi and Rolland are currently based full-time in their Pemba base in Mozambique, leading lives fully dependent on the Lord’s miraculous provision. In one of her testimonies, Heidi describes a time when she experienced a supernatural multiplication of food. She was in Chihango, Mozambique, with Rolland, her two biological children, and 320 Mozambican children, when there were shootings outside the orphanage and was told to leave the area with her children. Stranded, none of them were able to eat for days. Then a woman from the American embassy came with some rice for her family, which she realized was made to feed only four people. Heidi explained that she had many more children who were hungry, but she was unable to receive more food from the embassy. Heidi then gathered her children to pray and bless the food that was only meant for four people, praying in faith that there would always be enough because the Lord Jesus died on the cross at Calvary. As she began to feed the children, a miracle began to take place: every single child and adult was able to eat a large plate of food with much left over. This miracle was only the beginning to what the Lord would do in their ministry for years to come.
Iris’ mission is to express a living and tangible response to those commandments that Jesus called greatest: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Iris oversees some 10,000 churches, fifteen outreach bases, five bible colleges, medical clinics, church-based orphan care, children’s villages, primary schools, cottage industries, widow’s programs, well drilling projects, missionary training schools village feeding programs, housing for the disabled and other development initiatives. Iris churches can be seen in nations all around the world, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Korea, Sudan and Tanzania.
Heidi earned her BA and MA degrees at Vanguard University and her PhD in systematic theology from King’s College London. Her ‘Stop for the One’ campaign draws on the love of Jesus that compels the church to partake in bringing the spirit of adoption to orphans around the world so that they are transformed to full sons and daughters of Christ. Her books, including Compelled by Love, There Is Always Enough, and Learning to Love share stories of life in Mozambique, amazing miracles, and the Lord’s hand amidst overwhelming need. Heidi longs to see a passionate tribe of laid-down lovers give their lives away for Love’s sake to bring the lost children of all ages and nations home to the Father’s house.
